Once a pretty and super fit lady, and now an utterly handsome guy with an enviable six-pack: Balian Buschbaum, born Yvonne. The talented German pole vaulter, who has won competition after competition in the European and World Championships, and even participated in the Olympics, opted for a gender reassignment operation in 2008, after retiring from the athletic world due to a serious injury. Speaking of his gender transition choice, Balian shared a few thoughts in the German press: ‘In hindsight, I think my anger drove my success. When you feel uncomfortable in your own body, you feel rage. I was able to channel that rage into my sport.’
