This is probably one of the most famous animal acts of heroism in the world, but it’s so unbelievable, it bears repeating. Back in 1996, a 3 year old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. Although gorillas are known to be territorial at times, one gorilla guardian, Binta-Jua, gently picked up the scared boy and carried him to a doorway for paramedics to rescue. Those who witnessed the extraordinary event said it was an incredible act of empathy. In the end, the boy ended up recovering fully and Binta-Jua became a household name.
