Like the aforementioned heroic humpback, beluga whales have also been known to save human lives. In 2009, a beluga whale in China saved a contestant in a free-diver contest. Yang Yun was participating in a contest that asked divers to swim in sub-freezing temperature waters at an aquarium called Polar Land. Yang Yun swam about 20 feet before her whole body shut down, effectively paralyzing her. A beluga whale in the tank saw Yang Yun, grabbed a hold of her, and pushed her up to the surface. Yun and the crowd were astonished by the heroic act.
