During world war one, the war at sea was equally as intense as the war on land. Norman Wilkinson was a British artist who volunteered to work in the army as a Naval Reserve. Norman witnessed the infamous torpedo attacks during his regular submarine patrols, where the German U-boats were sinking an estimated eight British a day. In a rare light-bulb moment, Norman came up with the dazzle camouflage, which was later adopted by both the British and Germans. The irregular shapes made it difficult for German soldiers to aim at British boats through a periscope.
