Have you ever noticed that some coins have ridges on their edges
while some don’t? Dimes and quarters have these ridges on their edges while
nickels and pennies have smooth edges. If you think they’re just there for
aesthetic value, you’ve got a surprise coming!
In the past, coins
were made with different types of metal that represented the true value of the
coin. For example, a silver dollar was made out of a single ounce of silver.
Enterprising people would shave off the edges of these coins to sell, then spend
the shaved coins without their value lessening! Manufacturers then ridged out
the edges to make it easier to tell if the coins were shaved or not.
