Some say those are for a better grip on the cup, but a more credible reason could be that these lines are a built-in ruler to measure the amount of your drink! For instance, the bottom line measures an ounce, which is the ideal serving for hard liquor. The bottom middle line is 5 ounces, for ideal wine serving, while the third line from the top 12 ounces, the ideal serving for beer.
