Wine bottles come with an inward indentation right at the bottom,
and while some would say that these are to indicate the quality of the wine,
that’s not the real reason why. Some also say that the indentation serves to
collect sediment in the liquid, and that the indentation also serves to prevent
the sediment from flowing out when you pour the wine.
The real reason
for the indentation is that wine bottles were originally handblown and that
creating a seamless bottom isn’t doable if you want the bottle to stand in
place. The handblown process creates a nub at the bottom, wherein it gets
pushed, creating the indentation and having that seamless bottom.
