Prince, who famously changed his name for a symbol in an effort to get out of a record contract, was one of the driving forces of pop music. He was a musical innovator, and one of the earliest performance artists, who combined fashion, theatre, and music to make himself the star of a one man show. Simply put: if there had been no Prince, there would have been no Lady Gaga, no Katy Perry, none of the amazing performance stars we see today. A true artist til the end, he was still releasing music that was changing the face of pop until 2015. He passed away in 2016.
