Many people don’t see these formidable creatures as would-be heroes, but humpback whales have been known to save humans before. It’s a rare occurrence though, with only one instance recorded in history. Back in 2017, a renowned biologist, Nan Hauser, was likely saved by a random humpback whale. While researching the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, Nan Hauser noticed a 50,000 pound humpback wouldn’t leave her side. The whale even placed its fin on top of her head numerous times. For nearly 10 minutes, the humpback protected Nan Hauser from a tiger shark that was swimming nearby.
