This can be one of the most difficult symptoms for family members to cope with. Changes in personality can be significant, turning a usually sweet and considerate person into someone who is selfish and short-tempered. Most worrying about these personality changes, is people with dementia often have a lack of insight into their actions and are unable to empathize with others.
This can also manifest as confusion, suspicion, fear and anxiety which can be very distressing for the person and their carers. Often these personality changes are more apparent in new surroundings or around new people, when the person with dementia is outside of their comfort zone.
