In a similar way to missing social cues, people with dementia often struggle to keep up with and follow conversation and stories. This may manifest itself as an inability to follow the storyline of TV shows or films. This may be down to a combination of symptoms such as short-term memory problems and difficultly concentrating.

Researchers also discovered that people with dementia fail to understand sarcasm and other forms of indirect speech such as exaggeration. They can sometimes struggle to tell if someone is lying to them too. This inability to tell if someone is lying seems to only affect those with dementia that effects the frontal lobe of the brain rather than conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
