Laverne Cox and M Lamar
In 2014, Laverne Cox made history when she became the first transgender person in Emmy history to be nominated for an acting award. Cox burst onto the scene when she played Sophia Burset in Netflix’s hit series Orange is The New Black. In the series, Cox was also a transgender woman, and the film directors used her brother M Lamar to play Marcus as Sophia before she transitioned into a woman. Growing up, Cox nearly committed suicide due to all the bullying she experienced for being a transgender girl.
