Bars in the Wild West are not how we know bars to be today. There were no seats, just rails. You could relax and put your feet up on a rail. The tails had hooks to hold towels. The towels were used by the men to wipe the beer foam off their beards. The towels that were used to clean the beards and mouths of the many men were not often washed. All the foam from the multiple men made it easy for germs and bacteria to spread on the towels.
