Interestingly, since the stem does not contain real woody tissue, a banana tree cannot really be considered a tree at all. It is a large herbaceous plant with leaves rolled up over each other. In South and Southeast Asian cuisines, the tender parts of the stems of those trees (also known as the tree trunk) are commonly used. The locals there actually think of the trunk as a vegetable full of nutrition and they prepare different dishes.
