Firework Shell

While we all know that fireworks were invented by the Chinese, it seems as if the Italians are not getting enough credit for being the ones who introduced colorful fireworks in the first place.  Back in the 1830s, Italian pyro-technicians developed aerial shells. The inner anatomy of the aerial shell is actually responsible for the firework shape produced, as far as modern fireworks are taken into account.
