The Booming Bat Colony
Austin boasts several notable tourist attractions, yet every year, thousands of tourists flock to the Southern Congress Avenue Bridge to witness the impressive bat display. The bridge is home to the world’s largest urban bat colony, with the latest estimates pointing to a population of around 1.5 million bats. Every evening, right before sunset, the bats take off in search of food in a manner that can only be deemed as impressive. To get a glimpse of the spectacular display, plan your visits between March and October.
