The Chacaltaya Glacier in Bolivia lies 17400 feet up in the Andes and was once a top tourist attraction that drew skiers from all over the world. Unfortunately, due to global warming, the 18000-year-old wonder has been reduced to a few lumps of unsinkable ice that does not attract any visitors. In its prime days, it had the first rope tow in South America, and the highest ski lodge in the world, at an elevation greater than Everest. It was the closest ski area to the equator and was known as the “bridge of ice” before closing indefinitely in 2012.
