In the 1800s, a trip to West Pier in Brighton, United Kingdom, was considered a fun-filled seaside British holiday. There was no better place to visit, and during its prime days, the pier saw millions of visitors on an annual basis. The pier reached its peak attendance, with 2 million visitors between 1918 and 1919, after a concert hall was added. It began to lose its popularity after World War II. A local company took over the ownership in 1965 but was unable to meet the increased maintenance costs and filed for bankruptcy. The pier closed to the public in 1975 and fell into disrepair.
