Located in Louisiana, the Lake
Pontchartrain Causeway holds the record for the world’s longest bridge over
water since its construction in 1969. It is also listed as one of the most
iconic bridges in the United States, along with the Brooklyn and Golden Gate
Bridge. Stretching out for over 24 miles at 16 feet above water level, the Lake
Pontchartrain connects Metairie to Mandeville. While not particularly terror
inducing, the bridge does span long miles ahead, and it is said that for eight
of the twenty-four miles of crossing you won’t be able to see any land at all,
making for a very uncomfortable and anxious ride ahead! That’s not all –
imagine driving along that bridge during a very heavy downpour!
