Often people with dementia will become repetitive and crave routine. Sure, many people have certain ways of doing things, but this behavior borders on ritual, such as checking the front door is locked repeatedly prior to going to bed.

Extreme hoarding can also be a problem linked to this ritualistic behavior, for example buying a can of soup every time they visit the store despite having lots in the cupboard at home. It appears that people with dementia find comfort in routine, and it is certainly true the should something unexpected occur, they will find it difficult to cope with.
