10. Communication problems

Lapses in concentration make reading difficult, but people with dementia also demonstrate other problems with language and communication. They may struggle to find the word they are looking for, and may substitute it with nonsense, for example calling a watch an arm clock. This can make conversation difficult, for friends and family.

It common for people who have language problems to find conversation frustrating, particularly when trying to express something important such as their emotions. This also makes everyday conversation take much longer, and as symptoms progress many carers find they resort to yes and no questions to help this.
