In the heat of World War II, Princess Elizabeth begged her father to let her help out in the destructive war. Her father, King George VI reluctantly agreed, and the Queen joined the special branch of the women auxiliary service. At just 18 years old, the princess was driving huge military trucks and later trained as a mechanic. The Queen has always talked fondly of her time in the army and is still the only royal woman to have joined the armed forces.
