Disney World in River Country

Disney’s River Country and Discovery Island in Florida was the very first water park in River Country and looks anything but fun these days. It has been lying abandoned for more than a decade. It closed for annual maintenance in 2001 but never opened up again. Park officials blamed it on declining business after 9/11 and the success of Walt Disney World’s two newer water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. All the animals from Discovery Island were relocated to new homes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a much larger zoo, in 1998.
